Dog Grooming Training

One thing you need to realize if you are thinking about grooming your dog by yourself is that grooming is more than a haircut.  Grooming should include trimming your dog’s nails, brushing teeth, shampoo and wash, checking ears and other areas that tend to get build up, and cleaning those as well.

We are here to supply you with the basic dog grooming training you will need to get your pup looking like a million bucks.  After reading this you may want to do additional research on how to groom your specific breed of dog, since each breed requires a different type of cut.

First Steps To Grooming Your Dog

The first step to grooming your dog is to start by brushing your dog.   When a dog is wet it is much hard to brush through mats and tangled hair.  So, before you break out the expensive shampoo get out the brush, and start working through you dogs coat.  If there are mats that will not brush out then you are going to need to cut them out. Please beware that if you have to cut out the mats you are going to have to adjust the cut for that dog to match what you trimmed off.

Next go ahead before you get your dog in the tub check their teeth, ears, and eyes.  This is much easier to do before the water works begin, and I prefer to wash a dog with fresh breath in my face.  This is really easy to do check and clean the eyes and ears of your dog, and brush your dog’s teeth thoroughly

Giving Your Dog A Bath

Ok now you get to put your dog in the tub and start with the rinse.  One thing I would like to start of with is do not turn you water on full blast because many times the sound of the water can scare the dog, and the pressure of the water can hurt the dog especially if it is a smaller breed.  You need to have a water head on a hose like a vegetable sprayer to get the job done right.  I also like to start on the back of the body and let them get use to water temperature and pressure before making my way to the head.

Now, it’s time to start the shampoo process to begin.  When you shampoo your dog during the grooming process it is important that you NOT use concentrated shampoo but rather diluted shampoo.  Even if you have to wash the dog 2 or 3 times it is better to use diluted shampoo instead of concentrated.  Then work the shampoo into a lather, and be sure to talk to your dog during this time and make fun for them.

Dog Nail Trimmer

After that Rinse your dog, and dry them off with a towel.  This part can be a little crazy because the dogs seem to like to spray you with the water that is on their body, but it is

Dog Nail Trimmer

Next it is time to get out the dog nail trimmer and clip the dogs nails,  there are many types of dog nail trimmers out there so it might be best to ask a specialist at your local pet store.  I have included a video on trimming you dog’s nails for a closer look on how to use a dog nail trimmer and not hurt your dog when you trim their nails.
